What do we mean by blending?
Recently there has been a lot of talk about blending. We are having a blending party and blending chardonnay, so, what do we actually mean? Your first thought might be that we are blending two or more grape varieties together to create a blend such as the very popular Semillon Sauvignon Blanc. Not so!
What we are actually doing here is blending multiple barrels together that hold the same wine. Here at Oakvale we use barrels from over 15 different coopers (barrel makers). They come from 6 different French forest, and are anywhere from 1 to 6 years old.
Each and every barrel is different. In fact, I am still surprised to this day at how different the exact same wine can be from barrel to barrel. When it comes time to bottle a wine we pull samples from each barrel to taste, smell and judge every one.
From there we will eliminate any barrels that we don’t like and then blend together the remaining barrels into a tank in preparation for bottling. This may sound fun and easy but it actually takes hours to reach a final decision!
Over the last week James, Jackie and myself have been putting together the blend for the 2015 Single Vineyard Chardonnay and we are thrilled with the results! We can’t wait to share this wonderful new wine with you.
Those of you joining us for our first annual Oakvale Blending Party will be going through this process with us at the end of the month. We'll be looking at the barrels of Shiraz that our members picked and crushed back in February. Get ready for an awesome day of sampling wines!
It's not too late to BOOK NOW and get in on all the blending action! Just give me a call on 02 4998 7088.
